Ergebnisse einer schriftlichen Befragung von Fremdsprachenstudierenden

This article presents the principal results of a survey on the ways in which students of modern languages acquire and learn vocabulary. Its aim is two-fold: a) to explore the possibilities and limitations of questionnaire use as part of a quantitative and qualitative research design and b) to present the data of a comparatively large sample and to interpret them in the light of students’ comments on their vocabulary work. These data are compared with attitudes and beliefs expressed by students in response to open questions about language learning in general and vocabulary work in particular. This then leads to suggestions for follow-up studies and for the improvement of students’ second language proficiency.
