Ein fremdsprachenunterrichtliches Reformkonzept auf lexiko-grammatischer Grundlage

This paper presents a reform model of teaching and learning a foreign language with a view to explaining both the underlying theory and its practical implementation. The model denies the need for a rigid grammatical progression, fosters the learning of lexico-grammatical items rather than words and eliminates the distinctions between lexis and grammar as well as between declarative and procedural knowledge. The model is based on four main principles: (1) New linguistic forms are introduced on the basis of learners’ expres-sive needs. (2) Learners make the connection between structural and conceptual units. (3) The focus is on content-based and structurally relevant exercises designed to help learners automatise linguistic patterns. (4) It is important to ensure that issues explored in the classroom are relevant to learners so that their motivation to use the foreign language for comprehension and production will be increased.
