Modellreaktanz ist eine Form der Reaktion auf ein Modell, bei der der Beobachter das Modell nicht nur nicht imitiert, sondern bei der er das Gegenteil von dem tut, was das Modell intendiert. Dieser Fall eines „negativen Lernens“ ist allgegenwärtig und wurde in den zahlreichen Experimenten zum Lernen am Modell bereits oft beobachtet, jedoch nie eingehend untersucht. Zur Erklärung der Modellreaktanz wurde ein Prozessmodell entworfen, dessen zentrale Annahme ist, dass Menschen, die mit einem Modell konfrontiert werden, ihre inneren Standards mit den Implikationen des Modells vergleichen und sich auf dieser Basis für oder gegen eine Orientierung an dem Modell entscheiden. Dieses Prozessmodell der Modellreaktanz wurde in einer Untersuchungen an 238 Versuchspersonen getestet. Dabei konnten die Annahmen dieser „Modellreaktanz bei Wertkonflikten“ im wesentlichen bestätigt werden.

Reactance to modeling is a kind of reaction towards a model, in which the observer does the opposite of what was intended by the model. This case of ”negative learning” is ubiquitous and has been noticed frequently in experiments concerning observational learning. But in fact it wasn’t investigated thoroughly yet. To explain reactance to modeling a process-theory is introduced of which the central assumption is that people compare their inner standards with the implications of the model when confronted with the model. The result of this comparison is either conformity or reactance towards the model. The process-theory of reactance to modeling has been evaluated in two experiments with 238 German college students. The central assumptions of this “reactance to modeling in case of value-conflicts” where essentially confirmed.
